Shark FlexStyle
Since childhood, I’ve stuck to the classic combo of a basic hair dryer and round brush for styling. It’s the technique I learned from my mom, attempted by my dad (with less success!), and the one I’d plead with my sisters to help with when my arms grew weary from taming my thick hair.
My arm would tire out so much, even today sometimes I skip the styling I intended. The hair drying alone takes forever, and I’m only sometimes up for lifting another tool or waiting for it to heat up.
Shark surprised me with an all-in-one hair drying and styling system that solves all those problems, and at a fraction of the cost compared to other top brands. we are naming it the top multi-use hair tool in our inaugural Beauty Awards.
The Shark FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System
For me, this hair tool has truly revolutionized my routine, making it quicker and giving my arm muscles some relief. Here’s why:
A Powerful Hair Tool That Surprised Me
The brand known for top-notch vacuums didn’t disappoint with this high-powered blow-dryer. My thick hair usually takes forever to dry, but the Shark changed that. Unlike my regular dryer that needs my hair 70-80% dry to work, the Shark tackles it right away, preserving volume without the wait.
I can completely rough dry my hair in just around five minutes, or even less with the styling concentrator attachment. I opt for the highest heat and airflow settings for efficiency, but the FlexStyler offers three options to suit different blow-drying needs.
What I love most is the rotating nozzle—it transforms the dryer into a more ergonomic “L” shape, eliminating the need for constant arm lifting as I move through each section of my hair.
Versatile and User-Friendly Attachments
Among the assortment of attachments, my go-to is the oval brush. It mimics my natural blow-drying technique but with the added ease of using just one hand with the FlexStyler. Plus, its larger size gives my hair impressive volume. Unlike previous heated brushes I’ve used, this one doesn’t cause any scalp discomfort, possibly owing to the brand’s promise of zero heat damage through a temperature regulation system that adjusts “1,000 times per second.”
Let’s break down the curlers: On the upside, I’ve never achieved such full, voluminous curls with any other device. If you’re after tighter coils, though, this might not be the best fit. When I use them, my hair ends up with that glamorous Texas pageant look, but in a really flattering way. And once they cool down, they create a stunning curly blowout effect. The FlexStyler also comes with a built-in cool shot button to speed up the setting process for the curls; it helps cool down the barrel swiftly, especially if it’s been on a high setting and gets pretty hot.
Initially, using two different curlers for different directions seemed like a downside, but it’s not as bothersome as I thought. Swapping them out is quick, and I can easily locate the arrows in the mirror to know which way each head will curl. However, I wouldn’t mind if a future version of this tool allows direct airflow from the dryer without needing to switch the wrapping attachments. What I truly wish for are longer barrels—despite having short-to-medium hair, I still need to work in small sections to fit my hair. I can imagine users with longer hair might find this aspect frustrating.
Is the Investment Worth It?
Let’s address the price tag: compared to other high-tech stylers, the Shark FlexStyle’s cost is more like a pony than a larger investment. Priced just under $300, it feels reasonable.
Sephora recently unveiled an exclusive black colorway version—a limited-edition set featuring seven pieces, including auto-wrap curlers, two brushes, a concentrator, a diffuser, and its case.
Shark FlexStyle Limited Edition Review
I’m genuinely considering buying a birthday gift (and it’s definitely on my list for Mother’s Day).
After using it for a few months, my routine has significantly shortened, my hair feels smoother (no heat damage), and I’ve been receiving numerous compliments on my hair. Moreover, I can dry and style my hair in less than 10 minutes. This tool disrupted a three-decade hair-drying tradition, but I confidently affirm it was for the better.
